Yeoman Warder Chris Skaife, Ravenmaster of the Tower of London, said: “We’re delighted to have two new chicks joining the raven community here at the Tower. The shortlist comprises: Florence after the pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale, Matilda after the medieval Empress Matilda, Branwen after the deity from Celtic mythology whose name translates as ‘Blessed Raven’, Brontë after the 19th-century literary sisters and Winifred after Winifred Maxwell, Countess of Nithsdale, who plotted her husband Lord Nithsdale’s escape from the Tower of London in 1716 disguised as a woman.
